Project Horizon

Henry Ford is famously (and erroneously) quoted as saying “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses”.

Now, there are two ways one might interpret this quote; Maybe the suggestion is that people don’t know what they actually want because they can’t think beyond the realms of what they currently have. Another interpretation, which I am far more comfortable with, is that sometimes you have to dig a little deeper and read in between the lines when listening to your customers’ needs. I read somewhere that a customer doesn’t need a 10mm drill bit – they need a 10mm hole!
So maybe what Henry Ford was (allegedly) saying is that while customers might say they wanted faster horses, what they actually needed was a faster way to get from A to B.

We are in a very fortunate position with Project Horizon. Through Synergetic, SEQTA, myEdOnline, SchoolPRO, OMNILINK and now Engage, we have decades of collective insight from our customers. This insight helps to inform us as to their true needs and objectives, and is in fact is the very reason we embarked on Project Horizon in the first place; The realisation that our customers didn’t need a faster horse – they needed a faster way to get from A to B.

This week our Chief Technology Officer, Rick Sharp proudly and excitedly ran me through the process of creating a new school within the Project Horizon cloud platform. I’ll admit not really appreciating the significance of this seemingly mundane 30 second process, until I realised the significance was not what was involved, but what wasn’t; Setting up a new school in the cloud no longer requires virtual servers on which to host the platform. There is no need to configure remote connections and organise a time for a software provider to access those servers. And there is no need to wait for software to be installed and initialised. A process that has previous consumed weeks now takes seconds.
